Evolution has been selected for further development as part of the 2012 Cherry Lane Mentor Project and with your support will move to 59 E 59th Street Theatres in April 2012. PLEASE JOIN THE EFFORT TO BRING THIS MOVING STORY TO NEW AUDIENCES! Evolution was produced at Redhouse in January 2009 where theatre critics called it a “tour de force” and “a taut, creative, multi-character, one-woman show that will make you laugh as well as jolt your serious sensibilities.” Inspired by creation myths and scientific facts, Evolution combines the Paleontological history of whale evolution with the contemporary tale of a woman’s extraordinary transformation. Thus begins the story of Minnie, Pammy and Mother, a family coping with the mysterious changes brought about by an undetermined illness, the estrangement of two siblings and a mother’s desperation to protect her children. As each struggles with the impending transformation, objects from the past and the memories they evoke act as catalysts for the characters in this solo show that asks the question, “How should we respond to change?” Enhanced by the evocative music of award-winning composer Marc Mellits, Evolution takes the audience on a journey to another world where past, present and future exist in the same time and space. The development of this project has been supported by fellowship from the Interart Theatre, and granted readings and workshops at The Berkshire Theatre Festival, The Franklin Stage Company and Six Figures Theatre; the development of the play has also been supported through residencies at Muhlenberg, Gettysburg and Le Moyne Colleges.
